Legions Terminology/Slang
« on: 07.03.08 | 05:22 PM »
I’ve created this list out of an adaptation of an old list I have from Tribes, it’s a collection of Terms and Slang relevant to Legions. I’ll update it with new relevant terms as they come, if you have any, or want to see some changes, please post below with your recommendation.

This list is intended to be read by newbloods in order to give them some understanding of the cockney gaming dialect people in Legions speak.

So, on with the show!

************************************************
 -LEGIONS TERMINOLOGY-
************************************************

FE:L – Fallen Empires: Legions

T1 – StarSiege: Tribes

T2 – Tribes Two

T:V – Tribes Vengeance

T:AA – Tribes Arial Assult

------------------------------------------------------------------------

AoD - "Angel of Death" - Slang for the Sentinel Class, due to both its design and imposing nature.

BS – "*chocolate cow pie*" - When someone cant hack it that you killed them.

Cap – Refers to the flag or the capture there of.

Capper - A player that takes and captures the enemy flag.

Carrier – A player who is not a designated capper, but has possession of the enemy flag, usually as the capper passed it to them.

Chaser – A player that chases the capper/carrier.

CG – "Chain Gun"

Ded’s – "Dedicated Severs" – Computers that purpose in life is to run a legions server. Current in beta testing, there are six, located in the US and named Shazbot with the numbers one to six.

Dev’s – The Developers, Munge et al. The (very) small and dedicated team behind Legions, these people are the ones responsible for the development of Legions.

GG – "Good Game" - commonly after and in games regardless whether it was good or not. One of the voice binds, default CGG.

Drafting – Drafting (AKA slipstreaming) is a technique where a player will use the slip stream provided by another player to reduce the overall effect of drag. Drafting can be used to significantly reduce the average energy expenditure required for movement.

Energy Coils – Could munge please define.

Gliding – Gliding is the act of staying aloft in the air using jets conservatively to reduce decent and stay airborne for as long as possible. A player using good gliding techniques can make it from one side of the map to the other, assuming they have built up enough speed through skiing.

GLHF – "Good Luck Have Fun"

GL – "Grenade Launcher"

Grab – Grabbing the enemy flag.

Grabber – Player who Grabs the enemy flag, though is usually not expect to cap.

GUMPING – "Run forest run!" - When the capper takes the flag and *dances* off to the furthest edges of the map perimeter and keeps as much distance between themselves and the opposing players. A player famous for such manoeuvres in previous tribes games was Zhou Yu, who is currently recognised as one of the masters for Legions. Effective; yes. But falls into the same category as turtling. Not as detractive per se, as the player still has the opportunity to be hit. Nevertheless, just as poor.

Hax – "Hack's" - Used to suggest an opponent who has just killed you has done so using some form of game 'hack' such as an aimbot, or wall hack. Often used in geest as a way of acknowledging the players skill was exceptional, without sounding like an brown noes.

Llama - Llama is to loiter near the enemy flag stand waiting for the flag to appear there. Often this is when all of the other team are chasing their flag and either return it or your team caps it. You're so close to their flag stand that when it appears you can grab it and take off, before they're able to get their flag D into position again. Not to be confused with Lamer.

MA – "Mid-Air" - The act of hitting a player with a projectile while he's in the air. Best achieved with the rocket launcher.

NewBlood – A term used in Tribes and now Legions for a new player.

NS – "Nice Shot" - Frequently said by a person fragged in a spectacular way e.g. MA from a far distance.

OD – "Over Drive" - An advanced form of movement in Legions. At the cost of Health over time, a player has highly increased mobility. To use OD, a player must be touching a surface and travelling at 88mph. Over drive is not used for going fast, though a speed boost is noticeable, rather, its used to preform manoeuvres that are impossible using normal jets.

OD Capping - Grabbing the enemy flag using a tricky overdrive manoeuvrer on an established route. Players famous in Legions for such acts are Zhou Yu and Bhulitz.

OR – "Outrider" - Light Class for FE:L. Less weapons and armour, but highly agile and manuvarable due to its light nature. Capable of some very shifty  moves with its excellent Overdrive abilities; the outrider is built for speed.

Osnipe – "Offensive sniping" - Basically osniping is when you snipe into the enemy’s defense half, usually when they're in their base. Sort of like spawn camping from far away. Like turtling, this is frowned upon by many players.

Pass – The act of passing a flag to another player. Passing is used to take the heat off a capper, to confuse the offence, or to just keep the flag in your teams possession. A flag should always be passed to the player who is more able to keep it in the teams possession. Flag passing can be simple, but it is also an art from, true masters can pass a flag high in the air travelling at over 100mph and have a team-mate travelling equally if not faster make a grab. Some cap routes relay on passes, with a capper making a grab then passing it off to a carrier to cap it. In the event that a cap is possible, it is good etiquette to pass off the flag to another player, such as a defender or the player who stole it in the first place, to cap it.

POOT – A throwaway term, deliberately sounding dumb. Players throw POOT at each other in quick succession. Also has several other meanings vulgar in nature.

PUB – "Public Sever" - As the name suggests, a PUB is free for any to join, and thus are filled with all sorts of players from the hardened vets to the newbloods. Most PUBs are devoid of any rules or formality, and thus, in a PUB, you will see a lot of stupid *chocolate cookie*. Sometimes if a particular mob of players is on a PUB, they will enforce their own rules, such as no osnipe.

PUG - "Pick Up Game" – Also known as PU for short. Remember Gym Class? Same principal. Usually made up of random players, two captains, usually hosting the PUG, will select players to be on their team. Captains will selected players for their skills in the game and  will assign different team members different rolls, and will attempt to get some from of teamwork going. Better team wins.

Rabbit – A player who runs with the flag while being chased by many opponents. Usually alone without support, the rabbit tries to stay alive without losing the flag. Good rabbits are masters of movement, as speed is their only ally.

RL – "Rocket Launcher"

RJ – "Rocket Jump" If you need to gain some hight/speed, this is an easy and instant way. Simply look down at your feet, fire a rocket, and use your jets. You'll lose health, but sometimes the situation demands it.

Route – A route is an established path of travel to an enemy flag or base. Routes are established if they provide fast access to the enemy flag or base, or if they allow for the accumulation of great speeds. Despite the fact that defenders usually know these routes and can often counter a capper attempting a grab using one, routes are still used due to the speed a good route can provide. Some routes even allow for a capper to make it from one base to the other within seconds. Routes are rarely designed into the map, rather, they are created by the ingenuity and perseverance of cappers. A prime example of this is the Legions beta testing maps, neither map was designed to incorporate or even accommodate routes, but players found a way.

Runner – A player who grabs the flag and runs with it. Literally. Commonly used in other games for a flag carrier, as running in Legions is asking to be “surprise sexed”, it is not to be confused with Capper.

Sentinel – Currently Under Development.

Shazbot - Word featured in a si-fi sitcom of the 1980, latter adapted in an ACDC song and then adopted into the starsiege universe as a curse word. Used most frequently when surrounded by insurmountable odds or when ammo runs out. The current IA dedicated servers are called the ‘Shazbots’ In legions, shazbot is replaced with a four letter word describing faeces, which in turn is changed to *Chocolate Cookies* as per swear filter settings.

SkatingEnergy Skating - Skating in Legions is done by activating the energy cushion below the player (a spring force away from the ground surface) that allows them to glide. Skating can mean either coasting along the ground in that state or using your energy coils to push the player across the ground while the energy cushion is active. When your energy suit is active, the boots automatically fire on when you're close enough to the ground. Translation; skating is moving along the ground while your energy suit is activated

Skiing - In Legions, skiing describes the act of using the energy cushion (skating) system along with the directional thrust of the energy coils to skilfully take advantage of the slopes in the terrain and ramps on structures to fluidly move through the world while gaining speed. Skiing was the old technique used in Tribes to reach incredible speeds, which involves reducing the friction between a player and the ground then using the environment as well as the players jets to gain speed. In Legions, skating is used to reduce that friction rather than mashing the jump button, Similar to T:V’s one button ski set up, but indefinitely more complex as skating is a movement form in itself. Skiing in Legions involves converting your momentum in one direction, to momentum in another direction using objects in the world. Downward momentum from falling or jetting can be efficiently converted into lateral momentum via landing on a steep slope that banks in the direction you wish to go. Lateral momentum can then be converted back into vertical momentum by using energy to launch off of an upward slope. Skiing also involves energy management and timing, players who are highly efficient with these two skills are able to ski at even greater speeds. Knowing the landscape is also an important skill, as travelling in set paths (routes) or over familiar terrain drastically reduces the chances of making a mistake that will result in a loss of speed.

SPAMMING - To saturate with a particular method i.e. grenade spamming: to excessively use a certain element in an iterative way. Spamming is most frequently seen in attacking bases, when the attacking team saturates (Spams) the bases with fire trying to destroy bases resources and defenders. A defending team can also spam their flag stand in order to prevent attackers from grabbing it.

Smurfing - Playing under a different name, usually so nobody knows it's you. Currently hard to do under IA’s current architecture.

Teapot – See Newblood - With Instant Actions avatars, the Teapot is the default avatar for new players. Most players change their avatar from the Teapot as soon as they join the service, but a lot of players don’t. The vast majority of the time, this is because they don’t know how to. As most Teapot’s, ontop of not knowing how to change their avatar, tend to have no skill or knowledge of how to play the games on IA, Teapot has become synonymous with Noob, Newbie, Newblood and all other forms of derogatory description of a new player.

TK – "Team Kill" - Face it, like big brother getting another season, *chocolate cookie* happens. So does tking. Do it deliberately and frequently, you could get reported for abuse and even receive an IP ban.

Triber – Person who played or still plays any of the tribes games with some form of near religious devotion.

TSTeam Speak - A commonly used Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) program that allows players to communicate orally using microphones.

Turtling - Turtling is when both teams have the other team's flag, and at least one of the cappers is hiding in his base for protection. This is considered very lame, Nobody likes 20 minute standoffs due to players hiding in their base. It can make the game very boring. With the current design of bases and classes, this isn’t a problem right now in FE:L.

VentVentrilo - A popular Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) program that allows players to communicate orally using microphones.

Warp - Warping is caused by by packet loss meaning that the sever cannot update a players position properly resulting in a player seeming to jump, warp, from place to place on the map. This can be extremely frustrating when they are being hunted as players will aim at the warper only to have the warper's position change. It is quite possible to induce a deliberate skip.

Whoring - Using a weapon like the Chain-Gun almost exclusively to great effect eg "CG *lovely lady*!"

YIDBON - Pulling off a yidbon means walk-grabbing the enemy flag a split second before a capper is about to attempt a routed high-speed grab. This move will always result in the yidbon being shot, while the capper has to either suicide or attempt a regrab with a less beneficial route.

EDIT: 22nd of September 2008. Added AoD. Same old *chocolate cookie* Still adding more as they come. Thank you munge for the skiing and skating defs, but could you please give a definition of the energy coils?

YIDBON - Pulling off a yidbon means walk-grabbing the enemy flag a split second before a friendly capper is about to attempt a routed high-speed grab. This move will always result in the yidbon being shot, while the capper has to either suicide or attempt a regrab with a less beneficial route.

That one made me laugh ^_^

Indeed a most entertaining glossary.

2. The characters move very fast so some people might be confused. Auto aim could be a nice option.

llama - A derivative form of lamer, most commonly used in Internet gaming circles. A user who behaves in a stupid or uneducated manner that's often characteristic of newbies.

Maybe rouge gives it a special meaning because rouge is 'special'  Tongue

i have never heard of "gumping".  i would argue that is simply "rabbiting"

also, in the tribes world its PU or pickup, not PUG

i also think it may be worthwhile to throw up a few of the more popular tribes chat binds such as vav (howd that feel) and vgx (you idiot) that have become terms of their own with implicit meaning.

A few more then :

Skiing : The act of using your jetting manoeuvers and using the landscape slopes to 'slide' along and effectively gain speed and momentum; it's a required skill to reach high speeds without OverDrive or to actually initiate OverDrive.

Gliding : Can be interpreted as Skiing (see above) but also can be denoted as the act of using your jets to remain airborne while moving. Used in conjuction with Skiing, it can lead to immense leaps from one side to the other of the battlefield.

LOL : Stands for "Laughing Out Loud" .... though most of the time, someone just finds an happening or comment funny

CTF : Capture the flag... one of the most popular team oriented gameplay in FPSes. Goal is to capture the flag of the other team and bring it back to your own base while your flag is present. Reaching the number of capture or having the highest number of captures after the time limit expires will net you victory.

TDM : Team Deathmatch; players are split into two teams and the team with the highest kill count at the end of the time or the team that reaches the set kill limit wins.

DM : Deathmatch; same as aforementionned TDM except that it is every man for himself.

Floater : Can refer to a player in midair, either of their own accord or from an attack that launched them.

Flag Pass : Throwing the flag to an ally to carry; quite a viable tactic both for giving the flag to someone with more health or throwing off enemies with an unexpected tactic.

Launcher : Not to confound with some weapons' names, a "Launcher" is any kind of projectile or appartus that will cause the subject to be moved from impact or use. In such, a Rocket Launcher is a 'Launcher' weapon since ground bound rockets can push an enemy away from the explosion.

Base Raping : Simply put, having one team assault and hold the enemy's base in hope to score easy kills by killing respawning enemies. (See Spawn Camper)

Camper : A player who doesn't move from his spot for a long period of time. There are active and passive campers; the active kind will camp an area and try to shoot out incoming enemies without regard of giving out their general position. Passive campers hold a position and attack any enemy that comes within their threat range; they also tend to remain concealed as to surprise the enemy. Passive Campers are not often frowned upon as they are most of the time people who assume defensive positions around the base. Likewise, some Active Campers might be the snipers; they'll hold a position in middle field and try to take down as many attackers as possible.

SC : Spawn Camper; refers to a player who remains close to a possible player spawning point in hope of getting easy kills on unexpecting targets.

Attacker : Player whom team or self appointed role is to secure objectives and engage the enemy head on.

Defender : Player whom team or self appointed role is to prevent the enemy from securing the objective.

Runner : Player whom team or self appointed role is to rush for objective while mostly disregarding the use of weaponry; Runners are usually specialists of Skiing and OverDriving.

Lamer : Player who uses tactics or features that are generally frowned upon. These tactics usually range from being rather effortless and yet effective and can lead to cause grief. Also used as an insult.

Grieffer : Player whom gives grief to another player or team in an attempt of being disruptive. Usually leads to the player being reported then banned.

-- Important Notions --

Noob/Noobie : A player who acts in irrationnal ways and purposefully ignore any sort of tactics and advice. Noobs are usually disruptive in their simple ways. Also a known insult of lesser degree that is scoffed off most of the time.

Newb/Newbie : Similar to a Noob/Noobie except that the player is not disruptive and actually trying to learn to play the game. Sadly, some experienced players tend to have little patience in showing the new players the ropes, leading frustrated newbies to regress into noobies.

Pro : Player who is recognised to be skilled in a particular way with the game. Some Pro focus on a single aspect to perfect while others attemp to learn and perfect all aspects.

Sore Loser : A player who blames his team's defeat on the other players of the team. Rarely is this case true and even so, it is considered to be a Sore Loser to put the blame on teammates.

Sore Winner : A player who takes victory to a whole new insulting level. Tends to flaunt openly and insult anyone he or she has had victory over. Does not tend to make friends easily... though Sore Winners are known to flock together at times (See "Clan").

Clan : A group of like minded players who decide to be recognised as a single entity. Clans can be beneficial and detrimental; they can lead to enjoyable sportsmanship in Clan vs Clan matches. They can, however, be detrimental if the clan is considered to be of a competitive level and constantly taking on public matches against regular players and imbalance the game's skill ratio. Also, for who wonders, the mention of clan in "Sore Winners" was just a blatant joke Tongue ... Though some Clans can be Sore Winners as well as Sore Losers.

Admin : The people you don't want to piss off Tongue They're also helpful and responsible for the well being of Instant Action and their games. They are a resource of information and support when required. Admins are generally well intentioned and fair; those who aren't usually don't last long.
