Discussion : FreePlays and ActionPass
« on: 08.18.08 | 03:00 PM »
Starting with the next release, we will be debuting our new monetization strategy for Rokkitball.  This is a good deal for everyone involved, and we've worked hard to make sure of it.   Please read and understand all the information here before jumping to conclusions.

Users will be able to play Rokkitball for FREE every day, on ANY of the 4 maps, not just Gauntlet.  The catch is that a user will only be able to play a certain number of games per day if they play for free.

If users wish to play more than is allowed for free, they may purchase a rental that allows them to play unlimited number of games per day, called an ActionPass.

FreePlays : 3 every day
Every 24 hours, Rokkitball users are granted (n) FreePlays, that allow them to play (n) games of Rokkitball free of charge, on ANY map.  This is the FREE aspect of the game.

* Players are given a certain number of games on ALL MAPS per day
* This number will be tweaked to amount to slightly less than 1 hour per-day
* FreePlays cost you nothing and are refilled every 24 hours
* FreePlay users may play against ActionPass users

ActionPass : Unlimited plays every day
Users may rent a pass to play unlimited numbers of games for the period of that pass.  This is called an ActionPass and is treated as a rental of the game.

* 1 Day ActionPass = 75 ActionTokens (no USD equivalent)
* 1 Month Rental = $3.99 USD (includes an 80 ActionToken "bonus" when purchased)
* 12 Month Rental = $11.99 USD (includes an 240 ActionToken "bonus" when purchased)

* Players are given unlimited numbers of games on ALL MAPS per day
* ActionPass users may play against FreePlay users
* Players who have purchased ANY Rokkitball content before ActionPass becomes available will be granted a free lifetime rental of the game.  This includes heads, map pack, jersey patterns, and team colors

Additional Content
* Any content that does not affect someone's ability to play the game is considered Additional content
* All Additional Content is purchased, not rented.  Once you purchase it you can use it with FreePlays or ActionPass
* Heads
* Jersey Patterns
* Team Color Packs

ActionPass with (n) Free Plays per-day

Starting with the next release, users will be granted a pre-defined number of 'Free Plays' per day.  This number will automatically refresh daily, allowing people to play the game for free daily, but with a limited number of games.

Outside of Free Plays per-day, users may also rent the game on a Daily/Monthly/Yearly basis.  The prices for these rental periods are listed below for your reference.  The daily pass can only be purchased using ActionTokens, while the Monthly and Yearly pass can be purchased directly with USD, and come with a kick-back of ActionTokens for your purchase.

NOTE: FreePlays and Rentals include access to playing the game and it's included maps.  They do not include additional content such as heads, skins, or team colors.
  • * Daily ActionPass: 75AT with no USD equivalent
  • * 1 Month Rental: USD3.99 (includes an 80AT "bonus" when purchased)
  • * 12 Month Rental: USD11.99 (includes an 240AT "bonus" when purchased)

But I've already purchased content, what about me?

The devil is in the details, and oh man what details we have for you.   In order to remain in equity with users that have already purchased content and supported RB, anyone who has purchased ANY content for RB prior to this release, will be granted a Lifetime rental of the game.   That is they will be granted a rental that does not expire as long as the game remains available on the site.  Once this goes live though, this grandfather clause will go away, so go purchase your content today!

I myself don't have a problem, I could buy some content quickly (if, of course, my dad has no problem with me ordering something with his credit card).

However, I believe this to be a tad bit unfair to new players. People who join AFTER the release will have no chance of getting the "lifetime"-rental. Is there a solution to this? Or shall they have to deal with it?

I think this release plan is a great idea. After all IA is a business and making money is an incentive to produce. The price is relatively cheap and I think it will be well worth it due to the quality and continues support of the game.

My only gripe is the proposed changes to the energy bar on the crosshair. I quite like it in the middle of the screen and I personally think it it much more efficient where it is.

Would it be possible to have a customisable option for the energy bar where those who prefer it centered can keep it that way?

Just my thoughts, but if we do not have a generous amount of free-plays, it will be extremely hard to find a decent game of rb.

This was a concern for us, especially given that it's really hap-hazard to find a good game now.   To combat this we have in place a 30 second grace period once you join a game, before your free play will be used.   There is a nice bar at the top that ticks down from 30 so you have time to figure out if you want to play or not.

[Directed towards RB team] Have you not seen how the community responded with the charging of maps? Have you not seen that there is nobody playing those maps?

That's the point of the ActionPass deal.   Now everyone can play those maps.

You also agree with me! We like the old crosshairs just fine! Leave them or give the option to change them (you better not charge for that).

This can be toggled using the "R" key.

From mine and Justin's comments you don't seem to read all of our post (or you have a very short-term memory), kingzot  Cheesy

Anyway, I think the pricing is good. Compared to other games like galcon this is a lot better. 12 bucks a year is not that bad I guess, if others are playing....

Interesting pricing. However, I'd still rather do the lifetime thing. $12 a year isn't much, but paying for 1 tiny thing for about $2 and then paying until the game is removed from IA is a lot better. :B

Also, I'm still waiting for a response for my other question. The release date. Is it tomorrow? Later this week? 2 weeks? A month? When?

Respectfully, KingZot, "Orange Narb".

P.S: No, I didn't read all of the posts. :B

EDIT:
Are there people playing the RB maps? NO! I bought those friggin things and never get to play on them! Waste of my money!

If it makes you feel any better, I'm not just buying a face, I'm buying the whole bundle. That way I could try out those maps and you could play on them. Although seeing as you've show small hints of not liking me, I kinda doubt you'd want to. :B

I really didn't see this coming. I get the feeling Legions will also cease to be free as well. Something doesn't seem to be being handled correctly on the business end of things here. Only about 30 people play RB regularly, and charging people will cut that.  I think RB is an AWESOME game, and should be more popular by now... An issue with marketing is the only reason I can think of for this.

I'm most worried how the charges will affect the PRO RB community!! If people like dixon and SS and tech9 leave because of the charge, it would take all the fun away! I love RB. Its one of the best games ever. But its fun is entirely derived from the competitive fire and abilities of your opponent. I don't know how many PROs will be left to make me want to pay for it. As is I only play when one of the PROs are on. Otherwise its not fun.

Kinda like the galcon rental, I like it.
75 AT = whatever 3/4 of $.83 is.

Meh, that's the main issue with games with public beta's. if you get in early, you get to play more. like, when all the MBO, ZAP! and TT maps were free for us? yeah..

This *should* be released at the end of next week if all goes well.

One of the ideas here is that the Pro's as you call them are undoubtedly bored with playing Gauntlet all the time.   In that regard, this benefits them because now they can expand their skills and master the other new stadiums against anyone.

I think you may be under the impression that people will either have to Pay to play after this release or not play at all.   With the FreePlay system you can still play totally Free, every day, 365 days a year.

If we continue to make the game better people will begin to play more, I think that is what will affect the Pro's.

My problem with an "x" amount of free games. ATM, I can hardly fine a good host! Here are my issues:

-Bots. I can't stand bots and they absolutely ruin the entire game for me.
-Lag. Some games are just unplayable. It also sucks because you don't know when your going to get it.
-Nubs. Not a HUGE issue, but I still hate playing against them.
-Other issues similar to this go here

These will be problems with the free games. Once you get going, your stuck.

Can we have free time instead of free plays? If we get 3 plays a day that is around 30 minutes of gameplay. Can't we just have a timer set to like 30-50 (or whatev) minutes?

RB is a not like galcon. I want to be able to jump in and out of games. As I wish. I do it all the time when I play. I will be in one game and then one of my friends invites me to his game. We will be SEVERELY limited if we have free plays instead of free time.

Think of how much more freedom players will have with free time over free plays. If it makes the end users happy, then it makes them more apt to purchasing content.
