Ok, here it is: don't stop failing to suck.
The greatest thing about the old school MP FPS games was the people. New-school gamers don't get that. Really, I should say, a lot of mainstream gamers don't get that. We have an opportunity now to make a game *together* that can be whatever we want it to be. The true lifeblood of this game isn't 1337 "graphics" or flawless execution of some tried and tested and shamelessly over*dance*ed gameplay mechanic. If this game succeeds, it'll be because there's people who just want to play to enjoy the experience of being a part of a living and growing thing while shooting at each other and coming out of the flurry of bullets and explosions with a smile on their face. THAT is what Quake was to me, that's what Tribes was to me, and that's what I want this to be. As easy as it is to say, "lol web games lol," or, "haha stupid lol boring blah lame," a whole lot of the people involved in this thing, from IA right down to the FE:L team, are completely excited about making this thing good. Not 'good' in the evil corporate profit margin sense (read, "EA"), but 'good' in the ~Valve~ sense, just approaching the same problem (and yes, it is a problem) from the opposite side.
Valve in particular strikes a chord because they're a company that was founded on the ideals of making great games. Steam is nothing more than a natural continuation of that ideal and, despite incredible scepticism, it became a staple of PC gaming. Games like Portal and TF2 were bound to hit store shelves, but Darwinia? What about Red Orchestra? Darwinia is a great game - a fresh RTS with unique gameplay (name another in the past 5 yrs - I dare you). Red Orchestra was a true-to-life historical FPS built on Unreal tech (!! .. srsly.. on Steam? That's pretty *dance*ing cool).
Point is, with Legions we want to make this *your* game. We're polishing up the core gameplay mechanics we think will be fun, but in the long run it'll be up to the players. My greatest fear for this project is that people don't take us seriously when we say the game will mold to what the players want. Basically, if you want to help make Legions the best game it can be, stick around. This project needs exactly that attitude, and that's the only thing, as far as I'm concerned, that can make it great.
Edit: Apparently the F word gets filtered to *dance* on the forums...
